Bosses sleep rough to raise funds for homeless

Business, community and government leaders have been encouraged to spend a night sleeping on the sand to raise vital funds to support the homeless.

Vinnies Queensland will hold its annual CEO Sleepout outside Maroochydore Surf Club on June 20, with a fundraising goal of more than $200,000.

In the past 12 months, 47,000 Sunshine Coast locals accessed Vinnies services, which is a 10.3 per cent increase from the previous 12 months.

“Across the Sunshine Coast, we continue to see the terrible impacts of the housing crisis on the community,” Vinnies Sunshine Coast president Beryl Rowan says.

“We speak with families sleeping in their cars or in tents on the street as rent prices increase while affordable and emergency housing options remain at capacity. I encourage our community to participate or donate to this year’s Sleepout, as the funds raised will go towards providing secure and safe accommodation for those experiencing homelessness.”

The Sunshine Coast Business Council (SCBC) is taking up the challenge and aiming to set a new Sleepout record for its team.

After raising more than $50,000 last year, chair Sandy Zubrinich says the SCBC is aiming for $65,000.
