Call for paddlers to join thrilling dragon boat racing

The Sunshine Coast came alive at Lake Kawana as more than 70 teams from Australia and New Zealand competed in the Australian Dragon Boat Championships.

And local crews thrived on their home waters. Racing across three action-packed days, the Sunshine Coast Dragons Abreast Mavericks delivered standout performances in the Breast Cancer Survivor category, finishing fifth in the 200m and 500m grand finals.

They also put up a determined effort in the Senior Women’s racing.

But beyond the results, it was the story behind the crew that truly stood out.

With participating paddlers ranging from newcomers with just two months’ experience to seasoned members of more than 20 years, the team embodied the spirit of dragon boating: unity, resilience and working as one.

“This was about so much more than racing,” club president Tara Knobel says.

“It was a whole team effort, on and off the water, and something we can all be incredibly proud of.”

The championships also marked the debut of the club’s new uniforms, which turned heads across the regatta and symbolise a new era for the growing Coast club.

Dragon boating in the region is open to everyone, offering a fun, social way to get fit, build confidence and connect with the community. Now, with AusChamps wrapped up, the club is inviting locals to get involved and experience the sport.

A free, one-month trial is open to all – no experience needed.
