Four-legged friends eat up attention at long lunch

The Sunshine Coast community has once again rallied behind local rescue animals, with Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge Society (SCARS) raising more than $50,000 at its annual Paws for a Cause Long Lunch.

Held on May 16, the sold-out Buderim event welcomed 100 guests to the Bloomhill Wellness Centre for the 8th annual fundraiser, with supporters enjoying a three-course meal by Thistle
in the Woods while helping raise vital funds for the region’s longest-running animal rescue.

Adding to the afternoon’s charm were some special guests: 11 baby kittens, four puppies and four rescue dogs which delighted attendees with cuddles and plenty of attention throughout the event.

Funds raised from the long lunch will go towards much-needed electrical upgrades and improvements at the SCARS refuge, which has been caring for vulnerable cats and dogs on the Coast for 47 years.

SCARS is a volunteer-supported, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming abandoned, surrendered and neglected animals across the region. Each year the refuge cares for hundreds of animals, relying heavily on community donations, fundraising events and foster carers to continue its work.

SCARS ambassadors Caroline Hutchison and Sami Muirhead from 92.7 Mix FM served as MCs for the afternoon, helping to create a warm and lively atmosphere for guests.

Organisers say the event’s success reflects the generosity of the Coast community and the strong support for animal welfare across the region.

The $50,000 raised will directly support SCARS’ ongoing mission to provide safe shelter, veterinary care and second chances for rescue cats and dogs in need.
