For more than two decades, a group of Sunshine Coast women has been quietly stitching together comfort, one quilt at a time.
The Hibiscus Quilters have made more than 4000 handmade quilts since the volunteer group was established in 2002, donating them to local charities.
Now, just four remaining members (originals Val and Pat, alongside Lee and Jenny) continue their work. Val has made about 400 quilts herself.
Since 2007, the quilts have been given to clients of Laurel Place, a government-funded, community-based organisation providing free, specialised and confidential counselling, support and education for people impacted by sexual violence. With services in Maroochydore, Moreton, Gympie and Murgon, Laurel Place gives a quilt to each new client as a welcome gift.
Laurel Place operations manager Freyja Gunn says the meaning behind the donations beyond their practical use.
“With an average age of 86 (the eldest being a sprightly 92 years of age), you will be in awe of this group of women, their stories, and the passion for their hobby,” she says.
“Laurel Place recognises that when these quilts are handed to their new owners, every stitch carries the quiet strength of the hands that made them and the compassion in their hearts. The kindness tells that gentleness survives, that healing can be pieced together from love and that even after everything, comfort can find its way back.”
The group recently handed over 60 quilts to Laurel Place staff at a morning tea.
