New ozharvest food rescue hub feeds demand

Australia’s leading food rescue organisation, OzHarvest, has opened a new hub in Kunda Park to keep pace with soaring demand.

In the same week, the charity reached a milestone of delivering its 65-millionth meal in Queensland.

OzHarvest’s latest Frontline Report shows that charities across Queensland are under more pressure than ever, with 70 per cent reporting an increase in demand for food relief, two-thirds saying they need more food to keep up, and 36 per cent of people seeking support for the first time.

“There are still so many families in Queensland experiencing food insecurity, particularly in the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions, and our new hub will unlock greater capacity to rescue more food, reach more charities and get help to more people, faster,” OzHarvest Queensland state manager Michaela Windsor says.

Urban Angels is one of the 317 charities receiving food support in Queensland. “OzHarvest has helped us far more than we can properly express,” unit manager Birgit Sowden says.

As OzHarvest’s national food rescue partner, Woolworths is integral to food rescue operations across the region.

“We are proud to support the opening of this new Sunshine Coast warehouse, which will significantly boost local food relief and get meals to those who need them most,” Woolworths social impact general manager Adam Bray says.

To keep OzHarvest’s wheels turning and help feed vulnerable communities, donate at ozharvest.org.

For every $1 donated, OzHarvest can deliver two meals to people in need.
