New private hospital a boon for coast healthcare

Maroochy Private Hospital will welcome its first patients in mid-June, marking a major milestone for healthcare on the Sunshine Coast.

The hospital is a $100 million, 10-storey facility rising in the heart of the Maroochydore City Centre, designed to deliver specialist care in one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions.

Developed by Fortius Hospitals, the hospital reflects a shift away from traditional large-scale models, focusing instead on clinical excellence, patient experience and strong staff culture.

It is the third hospital in the Fortius portfolio, following NSW’s King Street Private Hospital and South Australia’s Eastwood Private Hospital.

Fortius Hospitals director Warwick Crosby says the facility will focus on a small number of high-demand specialties.

“Globally, we are seeing a clear shift in how surgical care is delivered, with patients moving toward dedicated surgical facilities that improve patient experience and clinical outcomes,” he says.

Services will include orthopaedics, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and pain management, supported by six operating theatres and advanced imaging.

Sunshine Coast Orthopaedic Group will deliver orthopaedic services, with director Daevyd Rodda highlighting the hospital’s regional impact.

“As demand for joint replacement continues to grow, we expect Maroochy Private Hospital to become a true destination hospital, attracting patients from across the Sunshine Coast and beyond for specialist treatment,” Associate Professor Rodda says.

Director of nursing Heather Russo says strong recruitment has already attracted high-quality staff.

“Last week, we were delighted to bring our founding team together for a tour of the hospital and it is heartening to see a team forming that values collaboration and collective excellence,” Ms Russo says.

The hospital is in final commissioning, ahead of its early opening.
