Practical support for homeless

A chance sighting has sparked a practical community response to one of the region’s growing social challenges, with a new amenities block now open in Noosa to support women experiencing homelessness.

It all started when Smile for a Child Foundation patron and dual international Michael O’Connor noticed a woman living in her car near his home. That moment, he says, brought into focus an issue already being closely observed by local services and community leaders: the rising number of women over 55 experiencing homelessness.

The concern had already been identified by Matt Gluyas and Amanda Fortington, from Noosa-Coolum Salvos, who had been working alongside Noosa Council, former mayor Clare Stewart, and Noosa MP Sandy Bolton. In 2024, Matt and Amanda led the launch of Queensland’s first Safe Overnight Carpark project, designed to provide a secure place for women over 55 to sleep in vehicles while accessing support services: counselling, job placement assistance, health support and pathways toward stable housing.

Smile for a Child Foundation driving force Glenn Puckeridge says the initiative is already making a meaningful difference: “Thanks to the dedication of Matt, Amanda and the wider team, many women now experience safer nights and renewed hope for their future.

“This project is a testament to their determination and compassion, reflecting the power of teamwork to make a lasting difference in the community.”

A new amenities block was officially opened on June 8, significantly upgrading the site with toilets, showers, laundry facilities, a fridge and kitchen. The addition has also doubled capacity from six to 12 overnight stays, allowing more women to be supported each night.

Funding and support for the project came through a broad community effort. The Smile for a Child Foundation hosted a sportsman’s lunch in March 2024 at Sunshine Beach Surf Club, featuring former Australian rugby union player John Eales and ex-AFL player and coach Kevin Sheedy. The event raised $80,000 and honoured patrons including tennis star Evonne Goolagong Cawley AC MBE.

Additional support was provided by WomenKind Australia, Noosa Heads Surf Club and local Lions clubs.

Further community partnerships helped bring the project to life, including Sunshine Beach State High School principal Anthony Swan and students, alongside builders and trades such as John Bruff (painting), Dallas Furner (plastering), Mark Trevanion (Suncoast Water Proofing) and Tony Vaughan (water pressure cleaning), plus Graham Lewis, from the Salvos. The Noosa Dolphins Rugby Union Club also lent a hand, volunteering at the site in 2024 during a bye weekend to help clean and prepare the area for future stays.

“Coach Jim Mackay credited the day to the club’s extraordinary grand final success that year,” Mr O’Connor says.

Organisers say the project reflects what can be achieved when community groups, local government and volunteers work together to respond to urgent social needs, with a focus on dignity, safety and practical support.
