Salon offers much more support than haircuts

A new Mooloolaba hair salon has opened with a focus on supporting people experiencing cancer, homelessness and domestic violence.

Oxley Plus founder Amanda Oxley –a multi award-recognised hairdresser and four-time finalist in the Australian Hair Industry Awards – brings more than four decades of experience to the new space.

Beyond her professional career, Amanda has spent more than six years quietly giving back to the community by providing free haircuts to people experiencing homelessness.

“A haircut is not just about how you look. It impacts how you feel as well, along with your confidence,” she says.

“I just felt that I could use my skill to do some good community work.”

Her outreach extends to women experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy, helping them adjust to significant physical and emotional change.

“So many women come to me now because they’ve been impacted by cancer,” Amanda says. “They don’t know how to manage their new hairstyle, the texture, the colour – everything has changed.”

Oxley Plus has been created as a safe space for women who have experienced domestic violence, where Amanda says clients can feel supported and heard.

“A lot of people open up to their hairdresser and tell you things they wouldn’t tell other people,” she says.

“I want to be a safe space where women feel listened to and supported.”

Amanda says her work is shaped by deep community connection and personal perspective. She hopes to expand her impact through education and workshops focused on hair care, confidence and empowerment.
