Works will begin later this year on the upgrade of Sunshine Coast Stadium, with the project set to create a legacy for the region ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The state government has approved a $9million program to support community sporting organisations that need to relocate while the upgrade, being delivered by the Games Independent Infrastructure and Coordination Authority takes place.
The program will deliver a new clubhouse for the Kawana Dolphins Senior Rugby League Club, upgrades to the Meridan Fields community sports complex and temporary accommodation for clubs impacted during construction.
The Sunshine Coast Falcons Rugby League Club, currently based at Sunshine Coast Stadium, will temporarily relocate following the 2026 Hostplus Cup season.
During the 2027 season, the Falcons will play at Meridan Fields, which will receive upgraded field lighting, timekeeping and game-filming facilities, new goal posts and temporary spectator seating.
For the 2028 and 2029 seasons, the Falcons will move to the Kawana Dolphins Senior Rugby League Club, which will receive a new clubhouse and male and female dressing room facilities.
Design work is progressing following the appointment of Queensland firm Architectus as principal architect, with early site works to begin later this year ahead of major construction beginning in 2027.
Sunshine Coast Falcons CEO Chris Flannery says the club is excited to work with the state government, Sunshine Coast Council and the Kawana Dolphins on the project.
“The current Kawana clubhouse and dressing rooms have remained largely the same for over 40 years, since I was playing here as a junior,” he says. “So, to see the Kawana Dolphins players, staff, members and volunteers finally get a new clubhouse and facility is a wonderful outcome for everyone involved.”
