A University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC)cancer biologist is one of 22 leading experts selected to be part of a $5.8million national Centre of Research Excellence to find the causes of early-onset bowel cancer.
The UniSC cancer researcher Dr Lochlan Fennell, who is establishing a biobank on the Coast to analyse human tissue donated by bowel cancer patients under the age of 50, will join the centre to be known as ARTEMIS.
Announced by the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Early-Onset Bowel Cancer Centre of Research Excellence is a five-year program investigating factors contributing to the fast-rising number of cases in Australia. About 1900 younger Australians are diagnosed with bowel cancer each year.
Dr Fennell seeks to determine if modern living is contributing to the increased diagnoses.
