When it comes to holidays, I dream of clear skies and warm sunny days. So it’s a little surprising that while on a short getaway to the Gold Coast last month I found myself enjoying the wet weather.
Why wouldn’t I, when given the opportunity to curl up in a beautiful hotel on a comfy lounge with a good book, warm cup of green tea in hand, and views of the rain falling softly over the twinkling lights of Surfers Paradise below? Not too mention indulging in a delightful sweet caramel popcorn dessert. Bliss.
This evening certainly set the standard for what was to be a thoroughly relaxing and welcomed couple of days away.
I’ve been asked why I enjoy weekend getaways to the Gold Coast. After all, the Sunshine Coast has just as much (if not more) to offer in the way of world-class beaches, lush hinterland and dining options. But, sometimes it’s just nice to switch off from work, forget the housework and laze around, eating, shopping and swimming for a few days. Surfer’s Paradise is the ideal location given the short and easy drive from home.
Of course, it’s a bonus when you get to experience a new upscale global hotel brand. In November, InterContinental Hotel Group launched voco with the first location in the heart of Surfer’s Paradise. As part of the rebrand from Watermark to voco, the hotel completed a multimillion-dollar renovation.
The end result is luxe-modern meets sophisticated style. The vibe is reliably different and yet a little bit playful, while incorporating all the five-star amenities you could want.
Whether it’s enjoying a drink in the Social House bar, or eating dinner at Clifford’s Grill & Lounge, you could be forgiven for thinking you are in a chic Melbourne location. Voco is near the world-famous Cavill Avenue and beach, both of which we were able to enjoy once the weather cleared up. Rain, hail or shine – this is one getaway that certainly ticked all the mini-break boxes.
